VALGELIND

Artist Priit Pajos with raven painting.

If I had to choose one “bird of the North”, the raven would be a strong candidate. Its symbolism is rich and full of contradictions: witch’s bird, harbinger of death, bringer of news, keeper of memory, bringer of fire, carrier of illness… the list is long, dark and at the same time beautiful.
In my work, winged beings – especially crows and ravens – appear often. They show up as quiet observers and messengers, present yet wordless.

In my new painting series “Valgelind” (White Bird) I focus on ravens more seriously than before.
In old Estonian folklore, the raven was called Valgelind – the White Bird. It was both honoured and feared, associated with wisdom and beauty, but also with witchcraft and bad omens. In order not to invite misfortune into the home, people gave new names to the frightening creatures of the forest. One of the raven’s secret nicknames was Valgelind.

In these paintings I work with the imagery of the raven and fire. For me, the raven is a wise and magical being – and at the same time the White Bird, whose true name people once feared to speak aloud.
Burned wood as the painting surface brings a vivid, almost three-dimensional effect to the piece, and the delicate golden finish highlights the subtle nuances of light and shadow. The messenger bird and the charred wooden surface together form a strong symbol of impermanence and truth.

Byers Testimonials

“Priit’s art is like something out of a fairy tale — mysterious, captivating, beautiful, and nourishing to the imagination. Wood as a painting surface gives the works a special warmth. It has been pleasant and easy to interact with the artist..”

Sirkka

“Priit’s paintings have a strong impact on me through their powerful atmosphere and symbolic visual language. At the same time, they carry both a historical and an existential dimension, adding more to a space than just visual decoration. In the office where Priit’s works hang, they create an environment that compels one to pause and reflect on themes of power, ritual, and the fragility of life. They offer people the chance to step, for a moment, into another time and mood, stimulating creativity and adding new layers to discussions. Thank you, Priit!”

“Priit Pajose’s works are very special to me – they are hard to forget, and I always feel the urge to look at them again. Each time, something from before seems to have remained hidden, waiting to reveal itself. Suddenly, something tells a new story. It’s as if a certain spell prevents you from seeing everything at once… I eagerly await his new creations, ready to embark on fresh journeys of discovery..”
